Not every slab is ready to be finished when we arrive, and this one on Waiheke certainly wasn't.
The concrete was old, the surface was uneven, and previous repairs had been filled with new concrete that sat proud of the original slab. Grinding straight over that would have left a patchy, uneven floor with the old repairs standing out through the finish.
So the first job was bringing the level down. We reduced the high areas, repaired the concrete where it needed it, and got the whole floor sitting flat and sound before any finishing work started. That preparation is the part nobody sees in the photos and the part that decides whether the finished floor looks right.
From there it was three grinding passes to work the surface back evenly, then a grind and seal finish in low sheen. For a man cave that suits it well. It's tough, it copes with whatever gets dropped or dragged across it, and the low sheen hides day-to-day marks better than a high gloss would.
