East Auckland is mostly houses, and that shapes the work. Howick, Pakuranga, Bucklands Beach and Half Moon Bay are full of family homes at the stage where the carpet is coming up and something better is going down. Those slabs have often been covered since the house was built, and grinding one back is the first time anyone has seen what's actually in it.
Out toward Beachlands, Whitford and Maraetai the jobs get larger and more architectural. Coastal properties with big open living areas where a polished floor makes sense both for the look and because it copes with sand, salt air and constant traffic in and out.
Pool surrounds are the other thing this part of Auckland has more of than anywhere else we work. Wet concrete around a pool is a genuine hazard, and the usual fixes, grip coatings and adhesive strips, wear out exactly where people walk most. Texturing the concrete itself lasts far longer, because the grip is in the surface rather than sitting on top of it.
There's a decent amount of retail and commercial work through Botany and Highland Park too, where shop and centre floors need to look good under constant foot traffic.
If you've got a pool, you've probably already worked out that wet concrete and bare feet are a bad combination. Most people try a grip coating or an anti-slip additive first, and most people find the busy path around the pool is smooth again within a year or two while the edges stay rough.
Bush hammering works differently. Instead of adding something on top, we texture the concrete surface itself, so the grip is part of the floor rather than a layer over it. It can't peel, it can't be scrubbed off, and it doesn't need reapplying on a cycle. The finish is tested to meet AS/NZS 3661.1, the New Zealand slip resistance standard.
How much texture is the decision worth getting right. More grip means a rougher surface underfoot, which matters when people are barefoot. We settle that with you on site, ideally on a test area you can walk on, rather than over the phone.
It works just as well on outdoor steps, entranceways, ramps and anywhere concrete stays wet.
